TREASURY CHAMBERS,

590-

13 September 1898.

The Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury request you to submit to the Secretary of State for the Colonies the enclosed copy of a letter from the War Office dated the 8th instant, in which the Marquess of Lansdowne recommends that the Lodging Allowances of Army Officers who find it necessary to reside on the Peak at Hong Kong should be increased by 50 per cent.

My Lords do not think it necessary to refer the matter to the Colony; but They would be glad to know whether the Colonial Office possesses, or can easily obtain in this Country, any information confirmatory or otherwise of the statement that residence on the Peak is at least 50 per cent dearer than residence at Kowloon or on the lower level of Hong Kong.

he Under Secretary of State,

COLONIAL OFFICE.

I am,

Sir,

Your obedient servant,

EwHamilton
